Winston-Salem Polar Twins News Release
[KNOXVILLE, Tenn.] â The Winston-Salem Polar Twins continue to struggle, dropping their second straight game to the Knoxville Ice Bears 5-2 Friday night at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum. Shaun Aebig (1 goal, 1 assist) was the high scorer for the Polar Twins, who fall to 4-10 on the season. Kevin Swider led the way for the Ice Bears with three points (1G, 2A).
Aebig's seventh goal of the season, a power play tally at 19:36 of the first period, gave the Polar Twins the lead heading into the first intermission for only the second time this season. Nobumasa Kinugasa, signed Friday to a three-game tryout contract, and Steve Lajoie were credited with the assists on the goal.
Knoxville stormed back in the second period, scoring three unanswered goals for the 3-1 lead after two periods of play. Marcus Forsberg scored first for the Ice Bears, who improve to 9-4 on the season. K.J. Voorhees put Knoxville up 2-1 with his league-leading 13th goal of the season at 10:46 of the frame. Swider added the third Ice Bears' goal of the period with less than two minutes remaining to give Knoxville the two-goal advantage.
It was more Knoxville in the third period, as the Ice Bears kept peppering Winston-Salem goaltender Nathan Grobins with shots. In fact, it was the fourth straight game the Polar Twins allowed 50 or more shots on net. K.C. Caudill put Knoxville up 4-1 on the power play at the 5:22 mark of the third period. Todd MacIsaac put the game out of reach for Winston-Salem with his third goal of the season and a 5-1 Ice Bears lead.
"Once again, too many turnovers affected the outcome of the game," said Winston-Salem Head Coach Bryan Wells following the contest. "Playing shorthanded is starting to take its toll, especially after losing Jason Bone in the first to a game misconduct and two players to injury."
Troy Ilijow, who missed three games last week with a concussion, left the game early, as well as Frank Burgio, who went down with a knee injury. Marcus Willy and Graham Dearle did not play due to injuries sustained last week, and Jeff LaPointe did not play due to a 12-game suspension for an altercation last Thursday in Huntsville.
The Polar Twins finish out their long road stand Saturday when they visit Fayetteville for a 7:35 p.m. faceoff with the FireAntz. The Twins return home to LJVM Annex Thursday, December 9 for a rematch with the Ice Bears at 7:30 p.m. Great seats are still available.
