Winston-Salem Polar Twins News Release
The Winston-Salem Polar Twins began their first road trip of the season without much luck getting into the win column, dropping games to Huntsville and Columbus this weekend by identical 4-2 scores.
Friday night the Twins faced the Huntsville Havoc for the first time this season. The Havoc got out to a 3-0 lead on goals by Dan Buccella, Mike Utzig, and Luke Phillips but the Polar Twins made a comeback bid in the second period. Newly-signed defenseman Frank Burgio got things rolling for the Twins at 14:34 of the second period to make it 3-1. Joe Pace brought Winston-Salem to within one with his first goal of the season for a 3-2 game. The Polar Twins could not maintain the momentum in the third, however, as Huntsville regained the two-goal cushion and a 4-2 final.
Saturday the Twins headed to Columbus for their second game this season against the Cottonmouths. This time it was Columbus that came out victorious in a game that saw a line brawl that included goaltenders from both sqads and was responsible for a total of 162 penalty minutes in the first period. The Cottonmouths jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the game as Lorne Misita and Craig Stahl scored less than a minute apart in the middle of the first period, both on the power play. The Polar Twins responded in the second period as Steve Lajoie made it 2-1. A shorthanded Columbus goal by Tim Green 6:50 into the middle frame re-established the Cottonmouths' two-goal lead. Shaun Aebig scored less than a minute later to bring Winston-Salem back to within one goal, but a third-period goal by Columbus' Ryan Rutz capped the scoring for the final 4-2 score.
