Scoring all their runs in a five inning span the Calgary Vipers (47-26) defeated the Chico Outlaws (38-41) 11-7 at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. After not scoring in the first two innings the Vipers bats went to work with two runs in the third, one in the fourth, four in the fifth, and two in each of the sixth and seventh. With the win the Vipers increase their lead atop the North Division to a game and a half and clinch one of the top two spots for a playoff berth.

At the plate Jonny Kaplan and Wilver Perez led the way as both launched two-run home runs with Kaplan also scoring three runs and driving three in.

Making his debut Matt Hammons struck out the only batter he faced in the seventh inning with two runners in scoring position while Edward Valdez (6-3) recorded the win out of the bullpen with two and two-third innings.

Calgary opened the scoring in the third inning when Bryan Burke reached on a fielding error, Manny Ayala laid down a sacrifice bunt while also reaching on an error, while Jonny Kaplan and Jimmy Rohan both singled in runs for a 2-0 lead.

Chico got a run back in the fourth as Adam Buchini doubled and Patrick Terry collected a run batted in single for a 2-1 score.

The Vipers matched that run in the bottom of the fourth frame for a 3-1 advantage when Chad Ehrnsberger walked and Al Quintana doubled for a RBI.

In the fifth inning Calgary took a commanding lead as Kaplan reached on a fielding error, Wilver Perez lined his tenth home run of the season for two runs, C.J. Ziegler doubled, Ehrnsberger walked, while Quintana and Burke both singled in a run each for a 7-1 lead.

The Outlaws got another run back in the sixth when Jake Rife doubled, Buchini singled, and Terry collected a RBI fielder's choice for a 7-2 score.

Calgary continued the scoring in the bottom of the sixth frame as Kaplan was hit by a pitch, stole second base, Perez singled, Rohan walked to load the bases, Ziegler also walked for a RBI, and Ehrnsberger collected a sacrifice fly for a 9-2 advantage.

Chico matched with two runs in the seven inning when Matt Hibbert, Danny Gonzalez, and Bobby Hill all singled for a run, while Rife doubled one in for a 9-4 score.

Another two runs were scored by the Vipers in the bottom of the seventh as Burke singled and Kaplan lifted his sixth home run for a 11-4 lead.

In the eighth frame the Outlaws plated two more runs on four singles from Terry, Will Wright, Gonzalez, and Hill for a 11-6 score.

Buchini rounded out the scoring in the ninth with a solo home run for Chicago and a 11-7 game.

The Vipers welcome the Yuma Scorpions to Calgary and Foothills Stadium on Thursday August 18th at 6:30 with Dan the One Man Band Performing and on Friday August 19th at 6:30 for GLEE Night. Jose Canseco will join the Scorpions on Saturday August 20th at 5:05 PM for Serve and Protect Day along with Baseball Bonanza while before the game Heartland will take on Hell on Wheels in a Celebrity Softball Game benefiting Slave Lake. On Sunday August 21st the series will wrap up with Fan Appreciation Day at 1:35 including a Celebrity Home Run Derby before the game featuring Canseco, Theo Fleury, and Charlie Simmer.

Playoffs for the Vipers will start on Tuesday August 30th.
