Playoff Bound: Scott's Complete Game Powers 'Cats to 3-0 Win in Nightcap

North Adams SteepleCats News Release

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - With a winner-take-all situation on the line, North Adams tallied a run in each the first, third and fourth innings and freshman southpaw Trevor Scott (UC San Diego) made it stand with a complete game gem on the mound, as the SteepleCats split an NECBL West Division doubleheader with a 3-1 victory over Saratoga in the nightcap to clinch a berth in the NECBL Playoffs.

Depending on the outcome of Keene and Holyoke's contest, the SteepleCats (22-22) will enter the postseason as either the No. 3 seed or No. 4 seed, and should the Blue Sox - who trailed 2-0 through six innings on Friday night - fall to the Swamp Bats, North Adams will lock up the third seed and take on the second-seeded Vermont Mountaineers in a best-of-three first round series starting Sunday on the road.

After squandering a three-run lead in the opening game Friday, the SteepleCat offense tacked on steady offense in the first third of the contest before Scott dominated the rest of the way. The southpaw struck out a season-high five batters and gave up four hits through seven shutout innings to improve to 2-1 on the summer, besting counterpart Nick Cioffi (2-2) who gave up three runs on nine hits with six strikeouts and a walk.

Just like in game one, North Adams tacked on some early offense, using three hits in the top of the first to put the first run of the game on the board. Junior Joe Landi (URI) led the frame off with a single up the middle before scoring on a fielder's choice off the bat of freshman Brad Anderson (Pepperdine).

Then after a scoreless second, the SteepleCats doubled the lead thanks to Landi's efforts in the third. The junior laced a one-out single up the middle and stole second on a strikeout before junior Cody Doyle (Cal State L.A.) blooped in a single down the left field line to extend the visitors' advantage to 2-0.

An inning later, the visitors came through again, as freshman Jose Cuas (Maryland) laced a one-out single through the left side before moving to second. Then, freshman Jacob Huckabay (UT-Pan American) poked an RBI base knock through the right side to drive in Cuas, putting the visitors up by three heading to the fifth.

That was more than enough for Scott, who retired the final four batters he faced en route to his first complete game victory of the summer.

North Adams will learn its first round playoff destination after the conclusion of Holyoke and Keene's Friday night battle. With a Holyoke loss, the SteepleCats will face the Vermont Mountaineers; should the Blue Sox win, North Adams will fall to the No. 4 seed and face the top-seeded Swamp Bats. All series are best-of-three throughout the playoffs, with the higher seed the home team in Game 1 and Game 3.
