MEMPHIS—Two Memphis classrooms entertained RiverKings players during an educational—and fun—interactive presentation as part of the Newspapers in Education program with The Commercial Appeal last week.

Stephen Margeson and Jeremy Goetzinger made an appearance at Karen Nichols 5th grade class at Shelby Oaks Elementary School on Tuesday, Feb. 22, and on Thursday, Feb. 23, Travis Banga and Ted Crowley visited an after-school program in Memphis called Knowledge Quest.

Every classroom involved in the program receives newspapers and workbooks containing educational enrichment activities. Knowledge Quest teacher Ernestine Ward requested the program for her students.

"I have been involved with NIE (Newspapers In Education) for many years," Ward said. "I want to expose the children to things they would not necessarily get at home, so we use the newspaper in every way possible."

Through the program, teachers also have the opportunity to request professional hockey players come to visit their students. That's where the fun begins.

In both classrooms any stranger could tell that these students are eager to participate in the newspaper game with the players.

"Hockey is right here in the Mid-South; kids do not know much about it and I wanted them to get a glimpse of what it's all about," Shelby Oaks teacher Karen Nichols said. "The kids have been on pins and needles waiting for the players to show up."

While the players appreciate the educational bent of the game and enjoy meeting the students, the competitive part of their nature is always evident as well. They get their teams charged up about winning and everyone has a good time.

"The kids are great and very well behaved," Jeremy Goetzinger said. "I had some smart cookies on my team."
