Player Profile: Reed Scahill

October 16, 2013 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Port Huron Fighting Falcons News Release

One of the biggest factors in the first-place Fighting Falcons' success through the first month of the 2013-14 NAHL season has been the impact local players have made on the team. Through the first ten games of the season, players from the Blue Water Area make up three of the team's top five scorers.

Reed Scahill, a defenseman from Port Huron, is one of those local players making a big impact in his first season of junior hockey. Scahill outperformed expectations at every point of the off-season to make the Fighting Falcons roster, and has continued to shine in his first month of NAHL action.

Scahill was one of the biggest surprises at training camp, and his steady play earned him the opportunity to make the jump from travel hockey to the NAHL, which is a very uncommon route at this level.

"It's a huge step going from travel hockey to the NAHL, and I'm still trying to adjust to this level," Scahill said. "I put in a lot of work on and off the ice in the offseason, and it's exciting to see it paying off. From a development standpoint, I can feel myself improving every day."

In his first month at the junior level, Scahill is second onthe Fighting Falcons with eight assists, and is currently tied for third among all NAHL defensemen in assists.

The 18-year-old Scahill has said that making the Port Huron Fighting Falcons is the proudest moment of his hockey career, which started when he was just three years old.

"Being from Port Huron it's great to be able to play this level of hockey in front of my friends and family right here at home," he said. "The guys on the team are great to be around, and they've made it an easier transition that I could have expected."

Scahill doesn't have a specific pre-game routine or superstition, but he relies on his teammates to keep his nerves down, joking around in the locker room before it's time to hit the ice.

The defenseman accomplished a big goal by making this team, but he's quickly moved his focus onto a larger goal he held long before the Fighting Falcons started playing in his home arena: college hockey.

Aluia and the rest of the Fighting Falcons return to home ice Sunday, October 27 for a 4 p.m. matchup with the Michigan Warriors. Tickets are on sale now at the McMorran Arena Box Office.

Karen Newman, the "Voice of the Detroit Red Wings," will sing the national anthem before the game.

During the game on the 27th, the "Taking a Shot at Breast Cancer" fundraising group will complete their auction for pink Fighting Falcons warm-up jerseys, which the team will wear before the game. All proceeds from 50/50 raffles during Breast Cancer Awareness Month benefit the group, which donates the money to organizations and families in need throughout St. Clair County.
