Pittsburgh Xplosion News Release
PITTSBURGH, FEB. 1, 2006 -- The Pittsburgh Xplosion crushed the Ohio Aviators 162-92 tonight at Mellon Arena, led by Darius Mattear, who scored 31 points and grabbed 9 rebounds, and newly signed Chris Acker, who poured in 27 points in his debut with Pittsburgh.
The Xplosion improved its ABA record to 16-10 as Wayne Cogsdell added 22 points and two ABA rookies from the Pittsburgh area excelled: James Sutton Jr. of McKeesport added 21 points and 9 rebounds and Brice Flenory of New Kensington scored a season-high 17.
Acker, 24, a former star guard with the ABA's Detroit Wheels and Chaminade University, was signed earlier today and made an instant impact with 27 points, 8 assists and 6 rebounds. He is the brother of NBA roolie Alex Acker of the Detroit Pistons.
The Xplosion won the game easily despite missing three key players: ABA All Star Armon Gilliam, Coleco Buie and DeVaughn Halsel. Jabari Matthews led the Ohio Aviators with 23 points and Ryan Ball and Shawn Hill each scored 17.
The Xplosion's next home game is Tuesday, Feb. 14 against the ABA's top team, the Indiana Alley Cats, at Mellon Arena. Tip off is 7 p.m.
