
Pitchers Struggle on Day 7 (Spring Training)

Giving up 19 hits the Calgary Vipers (2-2-1) were defeated 12-9 by the Edmonton Capitals (4-1) at Scottsdale Stadium in Arizona. Calgary fell behind 7-2 after four innings and never could get back even despite outscoring Edmonton 7-5 over the final four frames. The good news for the Vipers is that they did not commit any errors while also collecting 12 hits.
Leading the way at the plate was Calgary resident Aaron Dunsmore who went two-for-two with a no-doubt home run while scoring three runs.
Calgary grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Wilver Perez tripled and Jimmy Rohan drove him in with a groundout.
Edmonton responded in the bottom of the second as Tom Collaro and Todd Linden singled followed by a Cody Nowlin three run shot for a 3-1 advantage.
The Vipers got a run back in the next half inning when Louie Templeton reached third base on a fielding error and Jonny Kaplan scored him with a single for a 3-2 score.
The Capitals increased their lead in the bottom of the fourth frame as Willy Aybar walked, Collaro doubled, Linden knocked in two with a two out base hit, Lou Santangelo singled, Nowlin tripled in a run, and Nick Valdez hit a sacrifice fly for a 7-2 lead.
Calgary got a couple runs back in the sixth inning for a 7-4 score when Jimmy Rohan singled, Calgary resident Aaron Dunsmore walked, Drew Miller was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Kevin Price walked for a run batted in, and Justin Tellam singled home a run.
Edmonton added a run in the bottom of the frame as Collaro singled and Santangelo singled followed by a RBI base hit from Nowlin for a 8-4 advantage.
In the top of the seventh inning the Snakes scored when Dunsmore homered, Miller reached on an error, and Price delivered a RBI double for a 8-6 score.
The scoring continued in the bottom of the frame as Enrique Cruz scored, Aybar and Collaro singled followed by a two-run Linden double for a 11-6 lead.
The Capitals plated another run in the eighth inning when Brent Metheny singled, stole second base, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a Matt Rogelstad sacrifice fly for a 12-6 game.
Calgary grabbed three runs back in the top of the ninth for a 12-9 score as Isidro Perez tripled, Rohan singled in one, Dunsmore reached with a base hit, and both Jeff Giacomini and Matt Kavanaugh drove in a run each with singles.
The Vipers continue spring training against the extended spring training Seattle Mariners team on Saturday May 21st at 11:00 AM MDT in Peoria, Arizona and will wrap up spring training against the Capitals on Sunday May 22nd at 12:00 PM MDT.
Calgary starts the 2011 regular season on the road in Yuma, Arizona on Tuesday May 24th with a double-header against Jose Canseco and the Scorpions.
The Vipers return to Calgary and Foothills Stadium for their home opener on Thursday May 26th at 6:30 PM MDT against their Alberta rivals, the Edmonton Capitals.
