Calgary Vipers News Release
Allowing only five hits the Calgary Vipers (6-7) defeated the Edmonton Capitals (6-5) 3-2 at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta to complete a three-game series sweep. On the mound Garret Holleran got the start and was solid in lasting six innings while allowing two runs on five hits. Out of the bullpen Chris Bodishbaugh threw a one, two, three seventh inning with a strikeout, Dan Morari (1-0) recorded the win by striking out the side in the eighth, and Claudio Galva (3) earned the save with a three-up, three-down ninth including two strikeouts.
The turning point in the game was in the sixth inning when the Capitals loaded the bases with one out and Holleran was able to induce an inning ending double-play to preserve the tie. After that the Calgary bullpen combined to finish off the game with nine consecutive outs. Out of the Edmonton bullpen Tom Boleksa (0-1) took the loss by allowing a run in the eighth frame.
At the plate once again Jonny Kaplan and Bryan Burke were the catalysts at the top of the lineup with Kaplan scoring twice on two walks and Burke laying down three bunts for two singles and one sacrifice. Wilver Perez meanwhile drove in two of Calgary's runs.
Calgary opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Kaplan walked, Burke laid down a sacrifice bunt, and with two outs Drew Miller delivered a clutch run batted in double for a 1-0 advantage.
Tom Collaro tied the game at 1-1 for Edmonton in the second with a solo home run.
The Vipers grabbed the lead back at 2-1 in the third frame as Garret Holleran doubled, Burke bunted for a base hit, and Perez plated a run with a groundout.
The Capitals tied the game back up at 2-2 in the next half inning when Todd Linden walked on three pitches, Collaro doubled, and after a fielding error Linden scored.
Calgary retook the lead in the bottom of the eighth when Kaplan walked, stole second base, Burke bunted for another base hit, and Perez singled in one for a 3-2 advantage.
