Lake County Fielders News Release
Yuma, Arizona -June 7, 2011- All five games played in Yuma led to the same result: a Lake County Fielders victory. The Fielders (10-2) defeated the Yuma Scorpions (3-10) by a score of 10-4 in the series finale. The win was the team's sixth in a row, as they keep their mark of winning each game played in only nine innings intact.
Despite not bringing a run across in the top of the 1st inning like they did in each of the first four games against Yuma, the Fielders were able to take the early lead with a three-run 2nd inning. Matt Mansilla led off the inning with a triple to right-center field and came home on Patrick Brooks' RBI single. Joe Dempsey and Brandon Newton had back-to-back basehits to load the bases. Rex Rundgren drove in a run with his single and Lino Garcia hit a sacrifice fly to bring in the third run of the inning.
The lead did not last long at all. Yuma ripped back the lead with a four-run bottom half of the 2nd inning. All four runs were scored with two outs, as Fielders starting pitcher Nick Gaudi couldn't find the strike zone. Gaudi issued walks to three batters and gave up a hit, before surrendering a key bases-clearing, three-run triple to Yuma first baseman Juan Camacho.
Yuma would not hold the lead very long. With two outs, Rundgren singled and Garcia walked, allowing the fiery Argelis Nunez an opportunity to break the game open. Nunez doubled to left, scoring Rundgren to tie the game, but it was an aggressive Garcia that was thrown out at home plate to end the inning to leave the game tied.
Fielders reliever Greg Lane (4-0), who entered the game in the bottom of the 4th inning, kept the Scorpions at bay. His steady outing gave the Fielders an opportunity to reclaim the lead, which they did in the top of the 7th inning. Garcia led off the inning with a walk and eventually stole second base. But, it took until Quentin Luquette to stepped to the plate for Garcia to score. Luquette drilled another game-winning hit, driving in Garcia with an RBI double. Luquette had the game-winning two-run double in the top of the 8th inning of Monday night's game. Luquette came around to score on Matt Mansilla's single, to give Lake County a 6-4 lead.
The Fielders piled it on with four more insurance runs in the top of the 8th inning. Brandon Newton got it going with a one-out triple, and Rundgren followed with an infield single to put two men on for Garcia. And, Garcia connected with a 2-2 pitch, sending it over the wall in left-center field for a three-run homer. It was Garcia's fourth longball of the year, as he added to his team-high 16 RBI. Nunez followed with another double and was brought home on C.J. Ziegler's RBI single, giving the Fielders a 10-4 lead, assuring them of a series sweep.
The Fielders have Wednesday off as they travel north of the border to Canada. The Fielders will begin a five-game series against the Edmonton Capitals, beginning on Thursday night. The Fielders enter the series with a three-game lead over Edmonton in the North Division standings. First pitch for Thursday's game is scheduled for 7:00pm local (8:00pm central). You can listen to the game on 1220 AM WKRS or online at fieldersbaseball.com or wkrs.com.
