Pitcher's Duel Favors Washington in Series Opener
June 28, 2022 - Frontier League (FL)
Florence Y'alls News Release
WASHINGTON, PA - Florence and Washington are two of the top offensive teams in the Frontier League, and each team scored a run in the first inning setting up what appeared to be an offensive showing. But then five and a half scoreless innings followed, only to be broken up by an Andrew Czech home run in the bottom of the seventh, and it gave Washington what turned out to be a pitcher's duel 2-1 victory Tuesday night.
Yasel Santana had only allowed four hits in six 1/3 innings until Czech's home run, his fifth of the season. The lefty swinger kept it fair towards the corner down the right field line. Santana finished out the seventh inning and takes the tough luck loss; he has gone seven innings with seven strikeouts and just two earned runs allowed in consecutive starts.
Florence (17-21) was not at a loss for chances to tie the game or to take the lead. As a team, Washington pitching walked eight batters and hit two more. Florence did not score on a single one of those free bases and left eight runners on base. One inning after the Czech home run, the Y'alls loaded the bases on a double and two free passes, but Anthony Brocato grounded out to third base to end the threat.
The only Florence run came on a Harrison DiNicola home run in the top of the first inning, the first dinger of the year for the Y'alls' utility man. Alberti Chavez recorded the only other hit of the game for Florence to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. Florence had entered the game with a league-best .300 batting average.
Kobe Foster pitched the first five innings for Washington (26-14), struck out six and walked five. Christian James picks up the win thanks to two scoreless innings of relief, combining with Kenny Pierson, Eric Mock, and Lukas Young for four scoreless innings. Young earns his sixth save of the year, leaving the tying run at third base to end the ninth.
Florence has still won 10 of the past 14 games and looks to get back in the win column tomorrow, Wednesday, June 29 at Wild Things Park. Jonaiker Villalobos takes the hill for Florence opposed by Rob Whalen, who leads the Frontier League with a 2.24 ERA and with seven wins. Game time is at 6:05 PM.
