Pitcher Volstad and Catcher Esposito Join Iowa

Des Moines, IA - Right-handed pitcher Chris Volstad and catcher Brian Esposito join the Iowa Cubs today..

Volstad, who will wear number 37, was 0-6 with a 7.46 ERA (34 ER/41.0 IP) in eight starts with the Chicago Cubs before being optioned to Iowa yesterday.

The 25-year-old was acquired from the Miami Marlins on Jan. 5, 2012, for pitcher Carlos Zambrano and cash considerations.

Volstad holds a 32-39 career record with a 4.59 ERA (298 ER/584.0 IP) in 103 appearances (102 starts) at the major league level and a 33-28 career record with a 3.45 ERA (198 ER/516.0 IP) in 89 appearances (88 starts) in the minor leagues.

Esposito, who will wear number 32, was a non-roster invitee to Cincinnati Reds major league Spring Training this season, but was released. The Cubs signed him to a minor league contract this week and he joins Iowa from extended spring training.

The veteran backstop spent the 2011 campaign with the Houston Astros organization, hitting a combined .197 with six double, one home run and 11 RBI at Double-A Corpus Christi and Triple-A Oklahoma City.

The Iowa Cubs play game three of a four-game set with Salt Lake tonight at 7:05 p.m. at Principal Park.
