Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES --The Cubs fell to the Bees for the second straight night, falling 6-1 after a quality start by Chris Rusin, his sixth of the season and third straight. The southpaw tossed six solid innings of three-run ball, surrendering seven hits and three walks while fanning four.
Bees (22-21) starter Matt Shoemaker did not surrender an earned run, holding the Cubs (18-23) to two hits in his third victory on the year. Rusin took the tough-luck loss, falling to 4-3.
The I-Cubs' bats got out to an early lead once again, cashing in on a lead-off triple by Brett Jackson, who is now tied for the league lead with five, and a throwing error by Bees' starter Matt Shoemaker to score the game's first run. Iowa's offense could not muster much else against Salt Lake's pitching staff, with the bullpen holding them to just one hit and no runs.
The Cubs bats were silent in the loss with just three hits on the night, two for extra bases with a Brett Jackson triple in the first and an Anthony Rizzo double in the sixth. SS Luis Valbuena (0-for-4) was a victim of highway robbery, having two extra-base hits taken away on sensational grabs at the left and centerfield wall in the fourth and sixth.
Salt Lake played small ball in the second, responding with two runs on an RBI-single by Drew Heid and a sacrifice fly by Matt Long. The Bees led 2-1 until they sprinkled four solo shots the first by Paul McAnulty (4-for-4), who drove in last night's winning runs, to extend the lead to two.
Mike MacDougal struggled in his second relief appearance as an I-Cub. After tossing a perfect seventh, the righty surrendered back-to-back jacks to Kole Calhoun and Efren Navarro in the eighth to put the Bees up 5-1. Esmailin Caridad then entered in the ninth, allowing a solo shot of his own to Ed Lucas to secure the Bees' 6-1 win.
Iowa will look to right the ship tomorrow with a 1:05 p.m. start in the final game of the four-game series with Salt Lake. Rodrigo Lopez (1-0) will toe the rubber for the Cubs facing off against RHP Garret Richards (4-1). Fans can tune in to Iowa Cubs action with Deene Ehlis and Randy Wehofer on AM 940 with the pregame show beginning at 12:45 p.m.
