Derek Whitmore Named Pirates 2010-11 IOA/American Specialty Man of the Year

The Portland Pirates are proud to announce that Derek Whitmore has been named the team's winner of the IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the Portland community during the 2010-11 season.

Whitmore, who captured the award for a third straight season with the Pirates, continues to have a positive impact in the community through his participation in numerous charitable endeavors.

The 26 year-old from Rochester, New York once again took a lead role in the Pirates Goals for Success Program and addressed more than 1,500 students during the course of the season encouraging them to set goals, eat and live healthy and to avoid the negative influences that they might encounter as they grow up.

In addition to his role in the Goals for Success Program, Whitmore also participated in a number of community activities during the course of the season including WJBQ's Cans for a Cure, Read Across America, Relay for Life of Greater Portland Fundraiser,

Freeze Out Hunger and the

6th Annual Dine Around the World Food & Wine Tasting Extravaganza

to support Gary's House.

Whitmore is now one of 30 finalists for the AHL's 2010-11 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, honoring the overall IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year. The league award is named after the former Hershey Bears forward and AHL All-Star who died in 1997 following a 16-month battle with leukemia. The winner of the Yanick Dupre Memorial Award will be announced by the American Hockey League in the coming weeks.

UNUM Pirates Hall of Fame Induction

Martin Gendron was officially inducted into the Pirates Hall of Fame, presented by UNUM on Saturday at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Gendron made a strong impression on Portland hockey in a short period in which he donned a Pirates jersey. Playing only two seasons in Portland (1994-95 and 1995-96), Gendron put up impressive numbers that have stood the test of time in the Pirates record book even against players that enjoyed a longer tenure. In only 120 games with the Pirates, he racked up 74 goals (seventh all-time in Pirates history), 61 assists and 135 points. Gendron still holds (or shares) three separate offensive records for the Pirates which include: all-time hat tricks (five), power-play goals in a season (15, 1995-96) and goals in a single game (four, 3/29/96 vs. St. John). Drafted 71st overall by the Washington Capitals in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft, Gendron suited up in 30 NHL games with the Capitals and Chicago Blackhawks totaling six points (4-2-6).

Joining Gendron in the Hall of Fame photo is (from left to right) Brian Petrovek (Pirates Managing Owner/CEO), Cary Olsen-Cartwright (Director, Corporate Responsibilty, UNUM), Martin Gendron, Alyssa Gendron and Michele Gendron with Alexis Gendron in the front.

Heart Walk 2011

The Pirates invite fans, friends and family members to join our team as a member of the Salty Pete Pacers

for the Southern Maine Heart Walk. This family-oriented event blends the benefits of physical activity, community involvement, and personal giving to help raise funds for research and education.

Second year defenseman T.J. Brennan is serving as the Pirates player representative for the Southern Maine Heart Walk. Brennan's grandmother passed away after suffering a heart attack when she was only 49 years old.

Heart disease is killing people from Maine in increasingly frightening numbers. Last year alone, over 4,000 Mainers died from heart disease. That's one in every 330 residents of our state. And more than 25,000 Mainers are living with heart disease. That's one in every 50. Odds are a few of them are people you know. A friend, a family member, a loved one.
