Portland Pirates News Release


An extremely busy and successful week moved the Pirates into first place in the Atlantic Division. Portland posted a 3- 2-0-0 record in five games last week, completing a stretch of eight games in 10 days with back-to-back victories. The week began with a 2-1 win over the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins, which extended the Pirates point streak to 13 games (12-0-0-1). The streak came to an end the following night in Worcester as the Sharks posted a 3-1 victory to temporarily hold off the Pirates surge for first place. A second straight loss followed as Albany topped Portland 4-2 to bring to an end a Pirates franchise record-tying eight-game home winning streak. The Pirates closed out the week with a 2-1 overtime victory in Hartford on Saturday and a 4-2 victory over the River Rats on Sunday. The win against Albany pushed the Pirates past Worcester and into first place in the Atlantic Division.

This week the Pirates head out onto the road for a three game trip starting Friday in Bridgeport. Saturday Portland travels to Syracuse to meet the Crunch and closes out the weekend Sunday afternoon at HSBC Arena in Buffalo against the Rochester Americans.

Jhonas Enroth made 35 saves to lead the Pirates to a narrow 2-1 win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins played Tuesday at the Cumberland County Civic Center. Matt Caruana and Mark Mancari supplied the offense for the Pirates, who tied a franchise record with their eighth consecutive home victory.

Ryan Vesce scored twice and Alex Stalock made 31 saves as the Worcester Sharks skated to a 3-1 win over the Pirates played Wednesday at the DCU Center. The loss ended the Pirates 13-game point streak (12-0-0-1) and their eight-game road point streak (6-0-1-1). Dan DaSilva netted the other goal for the Sharks, who took over sole possess of first place in the Atlantic Division with a 36-17-2-2 record. Marc- Andre Gragnani scored the lone Pirates goal.

Brad Herauf scored what turned out to be the game winning goal midway through the third period to lead the Albany River Rats to a 4-2 win over the Pirates Friday at the Cumberland County Civic Center. The Albany win ended the Pirates franchise record-tying eight game home winning streak. Matthew Pistilli, Drayson Bowman and Chris Terry also scored for the River Rats. Gragnani and Paul Byron scored for the Pirates.

Tyler Ennis scored the game winner on an overtime power play to lift the Pirates to a 2-1 win over the Hartford Wolf Pack Saturday night at the XL Center. Gragnani scored the other goal and added an assist to extend his point scoring streak to five games (4-3-7) as Portland improved to 34-18-5-3. Dale Weise netted the lone goal for the Wolf Pack.

Derek Whitmore scored twice and J.P. Lamoureux turned aside 28 shots to lead the Pirates to a 4-2 win over the Albany River Rats Sunday at the Cumberland County Civic Center. Kyle Rank and Brad Larsen netted the other goals for the Pirates, who moved into first place in the Atlantic Division with the victory. Portland improved to 35-18-5-3 with the win. Jerome Samson and Chris Terry netted third- period goals for Albany.

This Week:

The Pirates are on the road for three games this weekend. Friday Portland faces the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at 7 p.m. followed by a Saturday game at 7:30 p.m. in Syracuse against the Crunch. The trip ends Sunday at 4 p.m. when the Pirates face the Rochester Americans at HSBC Arena in Buffalo.

Friday, March 5, 2010 @ Bridgeport (Arena at Harbor Yard), 7 p.m.

Bridgeport enters this week's action with a 27-26-3-6 record.

Heading into their home game Tuesday against Hershey the Sound Tigers had lost two straight.

Greg Maudlin leads the team in scoring with 20 goals and 24 assists for 44 points in 59 games.

The Pirates own a 3-2-1-0 record against the Sound Tigers, including a weekend sweep of Bridgeport when they last met on January 29th and 30th in Portland.

Saturday, March 6, 2010 @ Syracuse (War Memorial at Oncenter), 7:30 p.m.

Syracuse is 26-29-3-3 and losers of two straight heading into action this week.

Derek MacKenzie leads the Crunch in scoring with 17 goals and 25 assists for 42 points in 44 games.

The Pirates beat the Crunch 3-1 in the only previous meeting February 12th in Portland.

Sunday, March 7, 2010 vs. Rochester Americans (@ HSBC Arena in Buffalo, NY), 4 p.m.

Rochester heads into this week's action with a 34-26-2-0 record.

The game marks the fourth and final meeting between the two teams. Portland owns a 2-0-0-1 record in the season series.

Jamie Johnson is tied for seventh in AHL scoring with 23 goals and 37 assists for 60 points in 62 games.
