Pirates Travel to Providence to Start Set with Bruins
December 8, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Portland Pirates News Release
Providence, RI - The Pirates will look to get back to their winning ways when they travel to Providence to face the Bruins on Sunday. Puck drop is 3:05 PM for the first of three straight games between the Pirates and the Bruins this week.
The Pirates earned a point last night in a shootout with Manchester at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee. Tobias Rieder scored twice for the Pirates, his third two goal game of the season, but the Monarchs scored twice in the third period to tie the game. Although Andy Miele scored in the shootout for the Pirates, Tanner Pearson's goal in the shootout proved to be the game winner and the Monarchs won 4-3. Manchester's victory gave them a 2-1 advantage in this season's VIP Cup, presented by VIP Tires & Service. Gilbert Brule's goal streak came to an end at 5 games during the contest, but he extended his point streak to 6 games with two assists.
Providence faced the Worcester Sharks on Saturday, winning a 4-3 shootout. Ryan Spooner, Matt Fraser, and Zach Trotman had goals for the Bruins and Alexander Khokhlachev had the winner in the shootout. Malcolm Subban made 34 saves for the victory, which was the Bruins' 5th straight.
KeyBank Key to the Game
Nothing but Net: In their last 5 games, the Pirates have been outscored 22-7 and outshot in every contest. The Pirates' offence needs to support the goaltending and find the back of the net early and often to end the Pirates 5 game winless streak.
The last time these two teams faced was November 17th at Providence, which the Pirates won 4-3 in overtime. Louis Domingue made a career high 43 saves in his first start of the season, and Gilbert Brule scored the game winner in overtime for the Pirates. The Pirates came back from a two goals deficit, getting goals from Tobias Rieder and Brandon McMillan to tie the game.
This afternoon's game can be heard on the Pirates flagship stations WPEI 95.5/95.9 FM as well as WEZR AM 1240 in the Lewiston/Auburn area and WTME AM 780/1450 in Oxford County. The game can also be heard online at portlandpirates.com by clicking "Listen Live" and can be seen live on AHL Live at ahllive.com. The pregame show starts at 2:45 with Jeff Mannix.
