
Pirates' Supplemental First-Rounder Barnes Joins Spikes

(STATE COLLEGE, PA) - Barrett Barnes, the Pittsburgh Pirates' supplemental first round choice in the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft, has joined State College Spikes Mini-Camp after signing with the Pirates on Friday.
Barnes, the 45th overall selection in the draft, earned First Team All-Big 12 honors as a junior outfielder this past spring at Texas Tech University. The Sugarland, TX native hit .325 with 17 doubles, six triples and nine home runs, 49 RBI, 53 runs scored and 19 stolen bases in 55 games for the Red Raiders in 2012. Barnes also became just the second player in school history to record a .300 batting average, 500 at-bats, 150 runs, 200 hits, 50 doubles, 30 home runs, 100 RBI, 100 walks and 50 stolen bases during his career.
An updated Spikes Mini-Camp roster is attached. Mini-Camp workouts will continue at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Saturday afternoon and Sunday evening, with 2012 Spikes Media Day scheduled for Sunday at 3 p.m.
The 2012 Spikes will begin the regular season on Monday, June 18, when they visit the Williamsport Crosscutters (Philadelphia Phillies) at Historic Bowman Field. The Home Opener at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park is set for Tuesday, June 19 at 7:05 p.m. against Williamsport.
The Home Opener will mark the first of five home dates in six days as part of Spikes Opening Week from June 19-24.
