Massachusetts Pirates News Release
WORCESTER, MA - The Massachusetts Pirates have signed Matthew Wilkerson. The 6'6", 270 lb. defensive lineman most recently had signed a contract with the Edmonton Elks of the Canadian Football League.
Wilkerson, who calls Citra, FL home, began his college career at Ventura College in California and then transferred to ASA Miami Junior College before seeing the field with Edward Waters University in Jacksonville. There Wilkerson played both tight end and defensive end.
In 2019 as a senior, Wilkerson appeared in 11 games where he collected 19 receptions for 293 yards and four touchdowns. On the defensive side, he tallied 25 total tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and one interception.
In 2020 he took part in the College Gridiron Showcase All-Star Game and had workouts with the Green Bay Packers and Jacksonville Jaguars.
In 2021 Wilkerson was on three rosters. He was listed as a tight end with the Sea Lions in The Spring League, signed with The Potsdam Royals football team in Germany, and was signed by the Iowa Barnstormers of the Indoor Football League.
This year Wilkerson continued to train at both positions before signing as wide receiver and defensive lineman with the Omaha Beef of the Champions Indoor Football league. That led to him meeting with the Edmonton Elks where he was offered a contract as a defensive lineman.
