
Pirates Sign DB Greg Johnson

WORCESTER, MA - The Massachusetts Pirates have signed former University of Southern California defensive back Greg Johnson. Johnson joins the team as it prepares for a first round Indoor Football League playoff game this Friday night at 7:05 at Phoenix Field and the DCU Center against the Quad City Steamwheelers. The Pirates (11-5) are the second seed in the Eastern Conference while Quad City (9-7) is the third seed. Johnson signs his first professional contract with the reigning champions of the IFL.
The 5'11", 195 lb. DB, who calls Los Angeles home, played parts of five seasons with the Trojans. Johnson appeared in 39 games with 25 starts. In his career he had 98 tackles including 6.5 for a loss and one sack. Johnson had three interceptions with one going for a touchdown. He deflected nine passes, recovered two fumbles and forced two more.
Johnson played in four games as a true freshman in 2017, but injured his shoulder and was given a medical redshirt. His best season statistically was in 2019 as a redshirt sophomore when he appeared in 11 games, made 35 tackles (four for a loss) and added one sack. He recorded two interceptions along with two fumble recoveries while forcing one.
Johnson's lone touchdown was a 37-yard "Pick-Six" in 2021 against San Jose State. Three times he recorded six tackles in a game for The Men of Troy, which was his career high.
A communications major, Johnson went undrafted in this year's National Football League Draft.
