Portland Pirates News Release
PORTLAND, ME â Boyd Gordon scored two goals, including the game winner for the Pirates against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in a thrilling 4-3 win in front of 4,003 fans at the Cumberland County Civic Center on Saturday night. The win also included the return of Pirates defenseman Nolan Yonkman who played in his first game since last November.
The Sound Tigers jumped out to an early lead at the 4:51 mark on a shorthanded goal by Chris Campoli. Campoli picked up the rebound off the original shot at the point by Ryan Kraft. When the puck came off Maxime Ouellet's left pad Campoli fired the puck past the glove of Ouellet to give the Sound Tigers the 1-0 lead.
The Sound Tigers would pad their lead later when Graham Belak gave the Sound Tigers the 2-0 lead on the power play just 1:15 into the second period. Chris Campoli came across the red line and hit Belak streaking across the blue line. Belak was unguarded as he entered the slot and used a wrist shot to beat Maxime Ouellet to his blocker side to give the Sound Tigers the two goal advantage.
The Pirates closed the gap to 2-1 on Tomas Fleischmann's second goal of the season. Boyd Gordon gave the puck to Jonas Johansson who hit Fleischmann coming across the blue line. Fleischmann received the perfect pass from Johansson and shot the puck to the top shelf and over Wade Dubielewicz's glove to bring the Pirates within one goal.
The Sound Tigers added their third goal by Ryan Kraft at the 9:01 mark to take the 3-1 lead.
The Pirates then rallied for three unanswered goals. Brian Sutherby started the scoring on the power play at the 2:25 mark of the third period. Dwayne Zinger originally fired the puck from the point and then on the rebound Sutherby jammed home the puck on the right side of the cage to bring the Pirates within a goal.
Boyd Gordon scored the game tying goal at the 11:43 mark of the third period on assists from Tomas Fleischmann and Jared Aulin. Both teams failed to score during the rest of regulation forcing the game to overtime.
The Pirates wasted very little time to take home the victory. With just 42 seconds elapsed in overtime Boyd Gordon gave the Pirates the win with his game winning goal at the top of the Sound Tigers crease. Dwayne Zinger took the original shot from the point that trickled out into the slot in a cluster of players. Gordon was cross checked down to the ice but managed to swat at the puck and bat it past Dubielewicz's left pad to give the Pirates the 4-3 win.
Three Stars of the Game: 1. Boyd Gordon (POR) 2. Ryan Kraft (BRI) 3. Chris Campoli (BRI)
The Pirates return to action on Sunday afternoon against the Hartford Wolf Pack at 7:05 p.m. at the Cumberland County Civic Center.
