Frisco Fighters News Release
In a quick strike league, defensive performance can make or break a team's chances of winning. The Fighters saw that first-hand Saturday night in a 72-58 road loss against the Massachusetts Pirates.
The hosts' quarterback, Anthony Russo, racked up eight touchdown passes as the Pirates (7-3) became the first team to score more than 70 points in a game against Frisco (8-1), which has lost two of its last three after a 7-0 start. The Fighters never led in the second half.
Fighters signal-caller TJ Edwards continued his tear on the ground, scoring four rushing touchdowns and pushing his total to 33 on the season - good enough for the most in the league in front of former teammate and current Bay Area Panther Justin Rankin (24). Martez Carter also had a big game carrying the football, going for 134 yards and a touchdown on 16 totes.
Charles Headen opened Frisco's scoring with a 48-yard kickoff return. Jerminic Smith and Headen both pulled in passing touchdowns from Edwards in the second frame, with Headen's giving the Fighters a 36-33 edge with 2:34 to go before halftime. That was Frisco's final lead of the contest, as Russo hit Darren Carrington II from 25 yards out on Massachusetts' next series.
Edwards scampered in three times in the final half-hour of play, and Bryce Crawford added a 22-yard field goal make.
