Peoria Rough Riders News Release
Peoria â Five of the players from the Peoria Pirates open tryout his past Saturday, Nov. 29th, at the East Side Centre in East Peoria, IL, peaked the interest of Coach Cowdrey and his Coaching Staff enough to warrant a second look.
"These players we had out here today were of a higher caliber than in years past. These players displayed enough talent out here today to make me want to further investigate their potential. The level of ability of next year's possible players is going to have to be high to be able to compete and achieve our goals. I am going to see if these five players have what it takes to come to camp," said Head Coach Bruce Cowdrey.
The five players slated for that second look are Frederick Wilkerson from Ann Arbor, MI, Michael Miller from Chesterton, IN, Andre Banks from Cedar Rapids, IA, Gino Williams from Memphis, TN, and Chris Stimmel from Tiffin, IA.
Wilkerson attended Northwestern University where he was a three-year starter. Miller attended Indiana University. Banks attended St. Ambrose where he was a 1st team All-American. Williams attended Yakima Valley and Stimmel attended University of Northern Iowa where he was on the 2001 All Conference Team, he was also named Player of the Week twice and was an Academic All-American.
"We've had tryouts in the past with more participants but far fewer players who warranted a second look," observed Cowdrey. " Players know Peoria as a great city to play in and know our organization as a first class one to work for; that reputation is paying dividends in the quality of athlete we are attracting."
Some twenty-five players at the tryout were tested in a 40 yards dash, pro shuttle drill, strength test and had the chance to showcase their ability to pass, catch and run with the football. The next open tryout will be on February 22nd at the East Side Center in East Peoria, IL.
