Indianapolis Indians News Release

INDIANAPOLIS - The Pittsburgh Pirates announced today that right-handed pitcher Bryan Morris has been optioned to the Indianapolis Indians, while infielders Ivan DeJesus Jr. and Jared Goedert have been reassigned to Minor League camp. The trio of veterans all saw action in the International League last season, as Morris appeared with the Tribe, Goedert with IL rival Columbus and DeJesus Jr. with Pawtucket.

Morris, who made his Major League debut with Pittsburgh last year, spent a majority of the 2012 season with Indianapolis, posting an impressive 2.67 ERA and 4.6 strikeout-to-walk-ratio (79 K, 17 BB) over 46 relief appearances with the Tribe. A former first-round pick (56th overall) in the 2006 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers, the right-hander owned a 1-0 record with one save and a 5.14 ERA (4 ER in 7.0 IP) through seven spring relief appearances in 2013. He began Major League spring training with back-to-back scoreless outings from Feb. 23-28 before allowing his first earned run of camp on March 3, and followed with a second pair of scoreless appearances from March 8-11.

Goedert entered Pittsburgh's spring training having faced off against Morris and the Tribe during the 2012 season while playing for the Indians division rival Columbus Clippers. The infielder crushed IL pitching in 2012, blasting 14 longballs in 86 games, including homering in four straight games from May 22-26, and also hitting two homers while plating a career-high nine runs on July 26 vs. Toledo. Following the season, Goedert was signed by the Pirates as a free agent on Nov. 8, 2012, and through 20 spring training games with the Bucs, he produced a .207 average with a double, home run and four RBI.

Infielder Ivan DeJesus Jr. saw his first action in the IL last year after being traded from the Dodgers to the Red Sox on Aug. 25, 2012. The infielder tallied 10 hits in first five games with Pawtucket, before receiving a promotion to Boston on Sept. 2 and finishing the campaign with the Red Sox. Originally selected in the second round of the 2005 MLB Draft, 51st overall, by the Dodgers, DeJesus Jr. was acquired by the Pirates from Boston with right-handers Mark Melancon and Stolmy Pimentel and outfielder Jerry Sands, for right-hander Joel Hanrahan and infielder Brock Holt on Dec. 26, 2012. Through a team-high tying 21 games at the Pirates Major League camp, he was batting a blistering .406 with a double, home run and two RBI.

Pittsburgh will continue its spring training schedule today at 1:05 p.m. against the Tampa Bay Rays. Potential Tribe right-hander Jeanmar Gomez is expected to make the start for the Pirates.
