Portland Pirates News Release
Portland, ME - The Portland Pirates (4-6-0-0) beat the Hartford Wolf Pack (6-7-1-0) by a score of 6-2 on Wednesday night at the Cross Insurance Arena in downtown Portland. It was the first win in six games for the Pirates, who went up against the Wolf Pack who were battling their own four-game slump. The Pirates were able to capitalize on their penalty kill in order to secure the win.
Pirates Head Coach Tom Rowe noted that the addition of Connor Brickley and the return of Dylan Olson and Gregg McKegg to the lineup added a much-needed boost to team morale. "Confidence-wise in the locker room it was a big thing," said Rowe.
The game started out with a fight only three seconds into the first period. Sena Acolatse dropped the gloves with Hartford's Tanner Glass. Both players received a 5-minute major, but the fight boosted team spirit early on in the contest.
Wade Megan lit the lamp for the first time in the game at 8:48 in the first period on an unassisted breakaway goal. Hartford tied the game 1-1 only two minutes later at 10:36 with a goal from Glass, assisted by Brady Skjei and Tyler Brown. Logan Shaw scored the go-ahead goal for the Pirates at 12:42, assisted by Kyle Rau and Jonathan Racine.
Greg McKegg opened the second period with the eventual game winner at 2:38, assisted by Brent Regner and Mike Matheson. The Wolf Pack pulled within one at 12:30 with a goal from Luke Adam, assisted by Raphael Diaz and Jayson Megna. The Pirates added another tally to the board at 18:28, when Rau had a short-handed breakaway goal to make it 4-2.
The Pirates didn't cool off in the final period, instead adding two more pucks in the net. John McFarland scored a power play goal at 4:24, assisted by Rob Schremp and Regner. Shaw notched the final goal of the night at 19:06, assisted by Rau and McKegg.
It was a good night for the Pirates' penalty kill, holding the Wolf Pack to 0/5 on the power play. Portland's special teams were able to score one short handed goal and one power play goal. Pirates' goalie Mike McKenna (3-4-0) went 28 for 30. He added 28 saves to the Gorham Savings Bank Saves for Charity total, bringing the number to $1,380 so far this season. Magnus Hellberg (5-6-1) recorded the loss in net for the Wolf Pack, saving 22 of 28 Pirate shots.
The Pirates and Wolf Pack will face off at the Cross Insurance Arena again on Friday, November 13, at 7:00. The game is Military Appreciation Night presented by Dunkin' Donuts. The Pirates will wear special stars-and-stripes themed jerseys and proceeds from the jersey auction and the night's 50/50 raffle will benefit the Travis Mills Foundation. The Pirates will also be collecting goods to donate for care packages for the troops currently serving overseas. Fans who bring items will receive two tickets to a future Pirates game.
