Portland Pirates News Release

St. John's, Newfoundland - Mathieu Beaudoin and Marc-Antoine Pouliot each recorded a goal and an assist and Curtis McElhinney made 40 saves to lead the Portland Pirates to a 5-2 win over the St. John's IceCaps in an American Hockey League game played this evening in front of 6,394 at the MileOne Centre.

Kyle Chipchura scored twice and Aaron Rome also found the back of the net for the Pirates and Maxim Goncharov and Colin Long each registered a pair of assists as Portland improved to 3-4-0-1 on the season.

Jason King netted his second goal in as many games and Shawn Weller tabbed his first of the season as the IceCaps dropped to 5-2-1-0.

For the second straight game the Pirates earned the early advantage, this time on Rome's first of the season where he battled for possession in the goaltender's crease and squeezed his tap-in effort by IceCaps goaltender Peter Mannino with three minutes remaining in the first period. In a similar sequence of events as the previous game between the two clubs on Wednesday, the IceCaps struck in the second period to gain the lead, this time receiving a power-play goal from Weller and a tally from former Portland Pirate Jason King to send the hosts into the second intermission with a one-goal advantage. However unlike Wednesday the Pirates had an answer for the St. John's attack, starting with Pouliot's first goal of the season only 46 seconds into the final frame. Beaudoin tallied his first goal since opening night on a rebound nearly five minutes later and Chipchura capitalized on a power-play opportunity with 10:32 on the clock to run his current goal scoring streak to three games. Portland would go on to seal the game with Chipchura's second of the night on an empty-net goal, shot from his own blue line with 1:16 remaining.

The IceCaps out-shot the Pirates by a 42-28 margin as McElhinney earned his first victory since opening night to up his record to 2-3-0. Mannino received the loss in net for St. John's, falling to 2-2-0 on the season.

The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the game were: 1. McElhinney; 2. Pouliot; 3. King.
