
Pirates Best Monarchs 5-2 in Preseason Play

Portland, ME - The Portland Pirates gained their first tally in the win column with a 5-2 victory over the Manchester Monarchs in a pre-season tilt at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland on Saturday night.
The five goals for the Pirates were netted by Jordan Southorn, Dan O'Donoghue, Henrik Samuelsson, Alexander Bolduc, Eric Selleck respectively. It was two-point nights for Southorn, Samuelsson, and Selleck, who also each added an assist. Phil Lane and Dylan Reese each recorded two assists for the Pirates.
After a scoreless first period, Southorn drew first blood with an assist from Samuelsson and Mark Louis to give the Pirates (1-0-0-0) the lead at 4:45 of the second. Manchester (0-1-0-0) fired back 31 seconds later with a goal from Kevin Gravel. The Pirates broke the tie midway through the second frame with the O'Donoghue goal, and a power play goal by Samuelsson five minutes after that.
The third period brought more tallies for Portland, with a short-hander by Bolduc and an even strength goal Selleck each adding to the lead. Manchester attempted a late rally, with Andrew Crescenzi netting the last goal of the game.
Portland net minder Mike McKenna (1-0-0) got the win, with 14 saves. Brandon Maxwell (0-1-0) and Yann Danis (0-0-0) split time between the pipes for the Monarchs. Maxwell totaled 15 saves, giving up 4 goals, while Danis saved 8, letting in 1.
Portland and Manchester will meet up for a second preseason game Sunday at the Sullivan Arena on the campus of Saint Anselm College at 3 p.m. in Manchester, NH. The two teams are slated to face off against each other twelve times throughout the 2014-15 season, with the VIP Cup presented by VIP Tires and Service going to the team with the most wins in the regular season series.
