Pippins to Host 2017 WCL All-Star Game
April 26, 2016 - West Coast League (WCL)
Yakima Valley Pippins News Release
YAKIMA, Wash. - The Yakima Valley Pippins have been named host of the 2017 West Coast League All-Star Game, an event at which the Pippins will honor Yakima's long and storied baseball history.
The game, scheduled for the third week in July with the final date to be determined in the fall, will be preceded by a Home Run Derby and other festivities at Yakima County Stadium. It will feature more than 40 of the league's top prospects from the member WCL teams.
"The West Coast League is an incredible platform for some of the best and brightest collegiate players who aspire to play professional baseball," Pippins general manager Jeff Garretson said. "The all-star game is a showcase for that talent, and we're honored to be able to host the event for our fans and the entire Valley."
The 2017 All-Star Game, which will be the league's 10th, comes 80 years after the Yakima Valley's first professional baseball team - also named the Pippins - started play in 1937. Garretson's grandfather, Bob Garretson Sr., played first base for that team.
"This Valley has always had a rich baseball history," Garretson said. "From professional franchises to World Series-winning American Legion teams to several high school state championships and many college and professional players, you'd be hard-pressed to find a more passionate, engaged fan base than here in Yakima.
"Through this event, we want to honor that strong baseball heritage here and continue to build upon it," Garretson said. "We're looking forward to working with local business partners to make this an unforgettable night."
The Pippins' 2016 home opener, presented by Legends Casino, is slated for Monday, June 6, at 7:05 p.m. against 2015 West Coast League champion Bend, Ore. Single-game tickets for all 31 home games are now available for purchase at Hunky Shaw's Team Shop, 12 S. Second St. in the historic Larson Building in downtown Yakima. Tickets also can be purchased by calling 509-575-4487 or online at pippinsbaseball.com.
