Pippins Hold off Late Elks Rally to Win Fourth Straight

After building an 8-0 lead, the Pippins were able to hold off a late Elks rally to win their fourth straight game.

After setting a season high in runs on Friday in a 15-1 win, the Pippins continued to score right away on Saturday. Elijah Greene lead off the game with a single, extending his hitting streak to 11 games. Two batters later, Tyler Lasch drove in Greene to give the Pippins a 1-0 lead.

The Pippins continued to jump on Dan Noughton in the second. With two on and two out, Greene would deliver again with a run scoring single. Kyle Dean would also check in with a two run single to extend the lead to 4-0. The Elks would bring in Ryan Mets in the third.

After tacking on another run in the fourth, the Pippins would blow the game open with three more runs, powered by RBI singles from Nick DiCarlo and Greene, to give starter Mason Wells an 8-0 lead.

Wells cruised through the first four innings, allowing just two base runners along the way. In the fifth, the Elks finally got to Wells with a two run single by Tristen Alvarez. An error by the Pippins would bring in another run.

The Elks would continue to claw their way back, scoring a run in the sixth to knock Wells out of the game, and grabbing two more runs in the eighth to pull within two runs. The Pippins would turn to Cole Fossat out of the bullpen to get out of the eighth. With the tying run at second base, Fossat struck out Nick Roberts to end the threat.

Fossat came back out in the ninth to shut the door and immediately ran into trouble. A leadoff single by Kaiser Weiss and a double by Alex Pallios put runners at second and third and brought the winning run to the plate with no outs. Fossat was able to buckle down and shut the door, getting a weak groundout, a strikeout and a lineout to silence the Elks threat and seal an 8-6 Pippins win.

With the win, the Pippins improve to 17-18 and have won four straight. With the win and a Kelowna loss, the Pippins have also moved into first place in the second half North Division standings.

The Pippins have an opportunity to sweep the season series against the Elks on Sunday. First pitch at 5:05.
