Pippins Close 2023 Campaign with 2-1 Win over Springfield

August 6, 2023 - West Coast League (WCL)
Yakima Valley Pippins News Release

SPRINGFIELD, Oregon - Owen Egan broke a scoreless tie with a solo homer to start the ninth inning, and the Yakima Valley Pippins turned back a Springfield rally to end the 2023 season with a 2-1 victory on Sunday.

Sunday's victory was the second in two days for the Pippins, and gave them only their second series road win of the summer. Yakima Valley started the year by taking two of three games from Cowlitz.

Shortly after Egan's homer, Zack Blaszak singled home a run to give the Pippins what turned out to be a crucial insurance run. Springfield scored a run in the bottom of the inning and had the tying run at second with two outs before a pop-out ended the game.

Max Goldberg picked up the win in relief. Zak Elvy kept the Drifters blanked through his six-inning stint.

YV's starting pitcher, Dylan Bishop, suffered a career-ending injury in a June 22 appearance at Yakima County Stadium. But the right-hander from Selah took the mound ceremoniously in the bottom of the first, receiving a proper sendoff from his teammates and applause from the Springfield fans before Elvy relieved him.

The Pippins ended the season at 20-34 and missed the playoffs for the first time in three seasons.

Yakima Valley begins its 10th anniversary season in 2024. Season tickets for 2024 are on sale now by emailing info@pippinsbaseball.com.
