Pippins Capture Series over Cowlitz with 6-2 Sunday Victory

LONGVIEW, Washington - Spencer Shipman homered and Derek McNary turned in a solid pitching performance as the Yakima Valley Pippins beat Cowlitz 6-2 on Sunday.
The win captured the series for the Pippins (2-1), who open their home season Tuesday against Corvallis (3-0) at Yakima County Stadium.
The Pippins entered the third inning of Sunday's contest down 1-0, and hadn't scored a run in 13 consecutive innings going back to Friday. That is until Shipman, in his second year with the team, sent a two-run blast into the left-field bullpen at David Story Field to give the Pippins a 2-1 lead.
McNary made his first appearance on the mound for Yakima Valley, and he did not disappoint. His ability to get ahead in the count and deceptiveness of his off-speed pitch was too much for the Black Bears offense. The Pippins starter finished the day throwing 5.2 innings, giving up just one run on one hit, while adding one strikeout.
The Pippins padded their lead in the fourth, when Gio Melchione was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, giving the Pippins a 3-1 lead. Beck Maguire followed that with a two-RBI single.
Yakima Valley added a sixth run in the fifth after Tommy Eisenstat served a line drive into left center for an RBI single.
Sophomore Evan Hamberger relieved McNary on the mound, tossing 2.1 innings and giving up a solo run with two strikeouts before his Spokane Falls CC teammate Devyn Hernandez finished off Cowlitz with two strikeouts of his own in the ninth inning.
