Pippins Bounce Back for 8-1 Win over Sweets

July 6, 2015 - West Coast League (WCL)
Yakima Valley Pippins News Release

YAKIMA, Wash. - For the second time in the span of three days, the Pippins followed up a tough loss with a dominant win, as they dispatched the Walla Walla Sweets, 8-1, on Sunday night.

Just like the Pippins (16-11) got from Darrion Simons in Friday's big bounceback win, a strong starting pitching performance from Jens Jensen led the way for the Pippins. The righty lasted 7 innings and allowed 4 hits, 1 run, 3 walks and struck out 5 to pick up his third win of the season. The only run the Yakima-native allowed came on a bases-loaded walk in the 6th.

He got plenty of support from the bats, too, as the Pippins teed off on Walla Walla starter Max Gamboa. Yakima Valley scored four times in the 1st inning by way of an Alex Guenette single, a Mitch Skaggs double and a Tyler Mildenberg sacrifice fly. The Pippins got two more runs against Gamboa in the 3rd to make it 6-0.

After the Sweets (13-14) got their only run in the 6th, the Pippins scored their final two runs of the evening in the bottom of the inning on RBI singles from Branson Trube and Guenette.

The win ended a streak of three consecutive home series losses for the Pippins, who took two of three games from Walla Walla. The two teams will play the back end of a home-and-home series starting Monday at 7:05 pm in Walla Walla. Left-hander Mitch Yada is slated to make the start for the Pippins, who hit the halfway point of their second West Coast League season on pace for a 32-22 record.
