Yakima Valley Pippins News Release

YAKIMA, WA - The Yakima Valley Pippins started strong in game three of the series, only to watch the Walla Walla Sweets score the final six runs on Sunday night, losing 7-2 at Yakima County Stadium on Gonzaga University Alumni Night.

Jace VanDeBrake (Gonzaga) led the Pippins finishing 2-4 at the plate, including an RBI double in the 2nd inning for an early 2-1 lead. Gavin Velasquez (Cal State Fullerton) earned the loss allowing three runs, two earned, over 6.2 innings. The Sweets (12-9) would take the lead for good in the 7th on a 2-out RBI single by Jarren Duran, ending Velasquez's night.

Thomas Triantos (Cal Poly) was the first reliever out of the bullpen, allowing one hit while recording two outs. Tanner Simpson and Matt Fish (Lewis-Clark State College) combined for the final 1.2 innings allowing three runs, two earned, extending the deficit, 7-2.

The Pippins (12-9) posted just three hits in Sunday's loss, including a leadoff single by Freddy Smith (Cal State Northridge) during the 3rd inning, scoring on the VanDeBrake RBI double. Despite going hitless the rest of the ballgame, the Pippins would threaten in the 7th and 8th innings before hitting into consecutive inning-ending double plays to stifle the late rally.

Following the loss, the Pippins return to action Monday night hosting the Gresham GreyWolves at 7:05 p.m. for a two game home series before Wednesday's scheduled off day. Fans can listen to all the action live on 1460 ESPN Yakima, the official home for Yakima Valley Pippins Baseball.
