Pioneers Pull Out Another One at Berkshire Black Bears

Wednesday, July 17, 2002 - Wahcohnah Park, Pittsfield, Mass.

Sean Brummett improved to 6-2 and Elmira tayed unbeaten against the Berkshire Black Bears with a 4-3 victory Wednesday night at Wahcohnah Park in Pittsfield. The Pioneers are 8-0 vs. the B-bears this season having outscored them 57-13 over those games.

Elmira made their 5 hits on the night hold-up in their closest game yet with this club.

Brandon Pernell led the attack with a pair of singles, two runs scored and a stolen base. Rolando Bello had an rbi double and a run scored and Bobby Hill smacked an rbi triple in the right-center gap in the 7th driving in Pernell with the winning run.

Brummett worked 7.2ip allowing 6h, 3r, 1er, 0bb, 3k for just his 2nd win in his last 5 starts. Julio Perez worked a perfect 9th with a pair of strikeouts for his 10th save. He maintained his perfect 0.00 ERA through 17.2ip this season.

Elmira has the best 2nd half record in the league at 4-1 and improved to 29-21 overall winning 6 of their last 7 games. Berkshire is 1-4 in the 2nd half and they have the league's worst overall record at 15-35.

Jackson Crowther (5-3) had a no-hitter through the first 5 innings but could not preserve a 2-0 lead as he gave up 3 runs in the 6th on 3 Elmira base-hits. Crowther went 6.2ip allowing 4er on 5 hits.

Former major leaguer curtis Goodiwn went 0-for-3 with a sac-fly RBI bringing his hitting streak to a close at 21 straight games.

Berkshire broke a scoreless deadlock in the bottom of the 5th with a pair of unearned runs without the id of a base-hit. SS Bobby Hill's throwing error allowed Ryan Smith to reach leading off the inning. Scott Allen laid down a bunt and catcher brian Jones throw to try to get the lead runner was late. Joe Kerrigan bunted the runners to 2nd and 3rd. Luis Mercedes hit a high chopper against a drawn in infield. Ron bush leapt and had the ball glance of his glove for an error allowing Ryan Smith to score the game's first run. Curtis Goodwin's Sac-Fly to RF brought in Allen giving the Black Bears a 2-0 lead.

Brandon Pernell led off the 6th inning with a single to LF off Crowther breaking up the no-hit bid. Pernell stole 2nd and with 1-out Norm hutchins was hit by a pitch. Rolando Bello doubled into the LF corner to score Bello and get the Pioneers on the board still trailing at 2-1. ron Bush grounded out to scored hutchins tying the game at 2-2. With 2 outs Rafael Alvarez was intentionally walked and Pedro Quero delivered his team leading 32nd rbi of the season on a single to left-center scoring Bello.

Berkshire tied the score in the bottom of the 6th inning on a solo HR to left-center by Mike moore. It was moore's 8th of the season and his 5th since joining Berkshire 14 games ago.

Elmira scored the tie-breaking run in the top of the 7th with Brandon Pernell singling to RF off Crowther and Bobby Hill tripling into the right-center gap to bring in the winning run.

Shigeki Sano (0-1) starts for the Pioneers against LH Dallas Mahan (4-2) in the series finale Thursday night at 7.

Elmira will play a 4-game series at the Brockton Rox Friday through Monday before returning to Dunn Field next Tuesday at 7 vs. Berkshire in the first of a 6-game homestand.
