Elmira Pioneers News Release
Elmira, NY- The Pioneers battled all the way to the end, including tying the game with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but fell just short as the Bangor Lumberjacks managed to plate a single run in the tenth inning to get a 9-8 win over Elmira on Wednesday night.
After playing three scoreless innings the bats on both sides came to life in the fourth. Bangor got the offense started on a Paul Powell Grand Slam to make it 4-0. Elmira would answer with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, Jeremy Dodson drove in the first two runs with the first of three doubles on the night followed by an RBI single from Ryan Smith to make it 4-3.
In the fifth Bangor would add two more runs and once again the Pioneers would keep it close picking up a run in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI groundout from Yuji Nerei making it 6-4. In the seventh Bangor made it 7-4 and once again the Pioneers rallied, tying the game on a two-run single from Dodson and a bases loaded walk to Jobu Morita.
In the ninth Bangor went ahead 8-7 and looked as if they were primed to get the win as the Pio's were down to their final out with a runner on third. But Shin Uchino booted a routine groundball allowing the tying run to score, sending the game to extra innings. In the tenth the âJacks scored the game-winning run after a pastball followed by a throwing error at third by catcher Ryan Smith. The error allowed Bangor to score the eventual winning run, making it 9-8.
Matt Burch took the loss allowing two runs, one earned in 2 and 2/3 innings.
