Pioneers Keep Rolling

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers News Release

With 7:01 remaining in the second quarter, QB Ryan Vena connected on a 20 yard strike to WR J.J. Outlaw, proving to be the game winner as the Pioneers (13-2) defeated the Mahoning Valley Thunder 62-33. The win is the Pioneers 20th consecutive victory at the Wachovia Arena and, more importantly, locks up home field advantage for the Pioneers throughout the 2008 AF2 playoffs.

The Thunder (3-12) scored on their first three possessions; however, they simply could not match an explosive Pioneer offense that found the endzone on every first half possession en route to a 42-26 halftime lead.

Vena went 16-26, tossing for 247 yards and five scores, including three to Outlaw and another two scores to WR Rich Musinksi. Outlaw compiled 123 yards on eight catches on his way to becoming not only the Schutt Offensive Player of the Game, but the Geisinger MVP as well. He finished the game with 4 touchdowns after hauling in a highlight reel grab from QB Matt Schabert late in the fourth quarter. Not to be outdone, FB Kirby Griffin provided the punch on the ground lowering his shoulder and powering into the endzone for 3 scores of his own.

While Outlaw and Griffin had the fans on their feet, it was the kicker who stole the show... by dropping to a knee. K David Davis popped "the question" to Briana Bartolini at halftime in front of 5,623 fans. For the record, she said "yes."

The Pioneers will end the regular season this Friday night in Albany. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00pm. Be sure to catch the game live online with Nifty TV or listen on the radio, WILK 103.1 FM.
