
Pioneers Humble Black Bears 8-0 to Open Homestand

The Elmira Pioneers opened their 6-game homestand with an easy 8-0 victory over the Berkshire Balck Bears Tuesday night at Dunn Field in front of 994 fans. The Pioneers have won all 10 encounters with the expansion Black Bears this season.
Shigeki Sano (1-1) fired 8 innings of 4 hit ball with 0 bb's and 3 K's for his 1st win of the season in 5 starts. Kenji Iwahara gave up a couple of hits but worked out of a bases loaded jam in the 9th to preserve the club's 7th shutout of the season.
Elmira belted 3 HR's on the night as Brnadon Pernell (5), rafael Alvarez (7) and Pedro Quero (9) all went yard for the Pioneers. Elmira scored all 8 of their runs in the first 3 innings of the game capping the scoring with a 6-run rally in the 3rd to send Berkshire starter and All-Star Jackson Crowther (5-4) to the showers.
Every Pioneer except Ron Bush collected a base-hit.
In the 1st inning, Rafael Alvarez reached when 2B Ryan Nevins mishandled a grounder and threw in the dirt for an E4. Alvarez scored on a Brian Jones double to left-center.
Elmira made it 2-0 in the 2nd inning on a solo HR by Brandon Pernell. It was 5th of the season and his 3rd since joining the Pioneers. All 3 of his HR's have come in the past week including a couple in consecutive games.
In the 3rd,Rolando Bello hit a lead off single and Rafael Alvarez launched a high towering HR to RF to make the score 4-0. A couple batters later, Pedro Quero hit his 9th of the year to RF building the lead to 5-0. Quero has 3 HR'' in the past week and is now tied for 4th in the league.
Osmani Garcia and Pernell rapped back-to-back doubles to increase the advantage to 6-0.Ron Bush walked and Crowther was replaced by Ken Harrison. Bobby Hill singled to LF, the ball eluded Jerome Daniels in the outfield allowing Pernell to score on the error. Norm Hutchins hit a Sac-Fly to LF to bring in Bush to cap the 6-run rally and finish the scoring on the night for the Pioneers.
The Berkshire bullpen went on to throw 5.1ip of shutout ball in relief of Crwother.
RF Greg Keagle (4-7) goes up against LH Dallas Mahan (4-2) Wednesday night at 7:05 in the 2nd game of the series.
