Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers News Release
Wilkes-Barre, PA- Even though the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers clinched a playoff birth they still have to get past the Macon Knights this Saturday, July 30th. Chances of the Pioneers hosting that playoff game are looking increasingly promising.
According to the af2 league web site, the number one and number two seeds are reserved for each division's champion. These teams will have a bye the first week of playoffs. The remaining four seeds are wild cards. Wildcard seeds are determined by overall record. The number one seeded wild card team hosts the number four seeded team while the number two hosts the number three.
Right now, The Florida Firecats have clinched the division title and therefore will receive a bye for the first week of playoffs. Mathematically, the Louisville Fire has solidified themselves as the number one wildcard team and can possibly bump the Manchester Wolves into a wild card slot.
There are three possible playoff scenarios that affect the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers. The first of which is if Wilkes-Barre defeats the Macon Knights, they will be hosting the Green Bay Blizzard in Wilkes-Barre regardless the outcome of the Blizzard's game against the South Georgia Wildcats.
In the second scenario things become more complicated. The Pioneers must lose to Macon and Green Bay must beat South Georgia. If this happens, the Pioneers will face the number one wild card team. The number 2 and 3 overall playoff seeds are still up for grabs. If Manchester wins this week against the Albany Conquest they will stay as the number two seed. If Manchester loses and the Louisville Fire defeats Quad City Steamwheelers then Louisville will take the number two overall seed and Manchester will become the number three overall and number one wild card seed.
The final and least likely scenario has the Pioneers losing to Macon as well as Green Bay losing to South Georgia. In this case, Macon will then become the number two wild card seed and will host the Pioneers in Macon, GA.
If the Pioneers host a first round playoff contest, the game will be held on Saturday, August 6th at 7:30 PM in Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza. Tickets for this game will go on sale Monday, August 1st at 10:00 AM. Pioneers season ticket holders' current season tickets will be on hold until Wednesday, August 3rd at 5:00 PM.
