
Pioneers Drop 9th Straight Sunday Game

Sunday, August 4, 2002 - Yogi Berra Stadium, Little Falls, New Jersey -
The Elmira Pioneers lost their 9th consecutive Sunday afternoon game as they got trounced at Yogi Berra Stadium 10-1 by the New Jersey Jackals. Elmira has been outscored 60-14 in their last 9 Sundays as they fall to 2-10 overall in day games.
It is only the 2nd time this season the Pioneers have been swept in a series. Elmira finishes the regular season 1-6 at Yogi Berra Stadium and stands at 3-7 overall against the Jackals. NJ comes to Dunn Field for a 4-game set August 22-25.
The red-hot NJ Jackals have won 11 straight and 19 of their last 20 as they improved to 19-3 in the 2nd half.
Rafael Alvarez provided the Pioneers with their lone run on a solo HR in the 4th inning to right-center. Alvarez finished the contest 3-for-4 including his 8th long-ball of the season.
Greg Keagle (5-9) got roughed up for 13 hits and 10 earned runs in just 4.1ip ashe took his 9 loss in his last 11 starts. Keagle surrendered 2 HR's walking 3 and strikiing out 4 before making way for Kenji Iwahara in the 5th inning. The Tokyo, Japan rookie Iwahara fired 2.2ip of shutout ball to keep the Jackals from building on their lead.
Julio Perez fired a shutout frame in the 8th to maintain his perfect ERA through 25ip.
Chas Terni led the NJ offense going 4-for-5 with a double and triple while Mikaela Dworken and Travis Bailey provided solo HR's increasing the Jackals league leading total to 64 in that category.
New Jersey scored 3 in the 1st, 2 in the 3rd, 2 in the 4th and 3 in the 5th off Keagle.
The first 5 batters reached in the bottom of the 1st. Craig Conway walked and scored the 1st runon a Chas Terni triple to right-center. Bill Rich singled to RF to drive in Terni. Mikaela Dworken walked advancing Rich to 2nd and then Ryan Kane singled up the middle scoring Dworken making it 3-0 Jackals.
NJ hit a pair of solo HR's a couple batters apart in the 3rd inning. Dworken launched his 9th HR to RF and Travis Bailey crushed his 13th of the year to left-center to give the Jackals a 5-0 lead.
Rafael Alvarez homered to right-center to get the Pioneers on the board at 5-1. Brian Jones followed with a long drive to right-center to try to continue the rally but CF Billy Rich made a spectacular running catch as he slammed into the wall but somehow held onto the ball for a long out.
Conway and Terni hit back to back doubles to lead off the 4th making it 6-1. rich's groundout advanced Terni to 3rd. Dworken walked putting runners on the corners. Ryan Kane hit a fly ball to RF and the Pioneers fired out Dworken at 2nd base for a double-play but HP umpire Yves LaMontagne inexplicably ruled thatTerni crossed the plate before the tag was recorded at 2nd. Despite the protests of the Pioneers the call stood and NJ led 7-1 after 4.
The Jackals scored 3 more runs in the 5th to send Keagle to the showers as Travis Bailey started the rally with a lead-off double down the LF line off the glove of 3B osmani Garcia. Todd johannes singled to right-center. Jack Lipari brought in Bailey with a double to right-center giving NJ an 8-1 advantage. Aaron Myers hit a Sacf-Fly to CF scoring Johannes and Craig Conway doubled to LF to drive in Lipari and end Keagle's day trailing 10-1.
The Pioneers and the rest of the Northern League are off for the next 3 days for the league All-Star Break. LH Sean Brummett (6-4) and RHP Julio Perez (15 saves) will represent the Pioneers on the East Division all-stars in Quebec City. The All-star game will be Tuesday night.
Elmira's next game is Thursday evening at 7:05 against the Allentown Ambassadors as the Pioneers open a 6-game homestand.
