Clearwater Threshers News Release

LAKELAND, Fla. - Ricardo Pinto settled in to deliver seven innings of one-run ball on Tuesday, leading the Clearwater Threshers to a 4-1 victory over the Lakeland Flying Tigers at Joker Marchant Stadium.

Pinto (6-2) surrendered a run on three hits in the first, but from there would not allow a base hit the rest of the way.

The Threshers right-hander retired the final 14 men he faced in order, and set down 19 of the final 20 men to bat against him. Pinto finished having permitted one run on three hits and a walk, striking out four across his seven innings.

All the offense needed for Clearwater (28-18) came in the first inning.

Malquin Canelo kicked it off with a single to left field against starter Brennan Smith. After Andrew Pullin grounded into a one-out fielder's choice, Rhys Hoskins drew a five-pitch walk.

Dylan Cozens then ripped a liner over the head of the centerfielder Jiwan James to score both Pullin and Hoskins on the two-run triple.

Clearwater and Lakeland (9-32) would trade scoreless frames all the way into the ninth, when the Threshers capitalized on a two-out miscue to tack on two insurance runs.

With two down and Chace Numata at second after a double, Tyler Ford struck out Jesmuel Valentin, but the pitch got by Grayson Greiner for a passed ball allowing Valentin to reach.

Canelo made the Flying Tigers pay for that mistake by working an eight-pitch at-bat before pulling a single through the left side to plate Numata. Carlos Tocci followed with a base knock of his own, bringing home Valentin to make it 4-1.

Smith (4-4) suffered the loss for Lakeland, despite allowing two runs on three hits in six innings.

Canelo finished 3-for-5 to lead the Threshers offense, as Clearwater earned the series win.

The Threshers will try for the sweep of the Flying Tigers on Wednesday, with first pitch set for 6:30 p.m. Matt Imhof (6-4) takes the hill against Jairo Labourt (2-8), and the call can be heard live on the Threshers Broadcast Network beginning at 6:15 p.m.
