Tampa Yankees News Release
TAMPA - Every batter in the lineup reached for the Tampa Yankees (22-23, 56-59) in a 12-7 triumph over the Brevard County Manatees (18-25, 47-65-1) on Tuesday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
The Yankees collected six extra-base hits in a game for the first time this season and tallied 15 total hits on the night.
Oddly enough, Tampa took the lead in the first without the need of a hit. Brevard County starter Johnny Hellweg forced in a run by walking four consecutive batters. A second run scored on a wild pitch, giving the T-Yanks a 2-0 lead.
Ericson Leonora hit a leadoff single in the second and reached third as Michael O'Neill came aboard on a force attempt, throwing error at shortstop by Angel Ortega. Jorge Mateo followed with a two-run double and scored two batters later on a two-out double by Mike Ford.
RHP Vicente Campos (2-5) took a perfect game into the fourth before the Manatees got on the board. Chris McFarland reached on an error and scored on a double by Garrett Cooper, cutting the lead to 5-1.
Tampa quickly answered with two more runs. Abiatal Avelino singled and scored on a home run over the wall in right-center by Ford. It was Ford's third homer in eight days and his fourth of the season.
Hellweg (1-4) allowed seven runs (four earned) on six hits in four innings, walking four while striking out five.
The T-Yanks' biggest inning happened in the fifth against LHP Zach Hirsch. Back-to-back base hits started the frame and Leonora followed with an RBI single. Following a double play, Mateo chimed in with a run-scoring single. Avelino lined a hit to center and Dustin Fowler smacked a two-run single up the middle, giving Tampa an 11-1 lead.
Brevard County made the game interesting in the sixth. The inning started with two-straight singles and an RBI double by Clint Coulter. RHP Monolo Reyes relieved Campos and surrendered a walk. One out later, a run scored as Taylor Brennan reached on a fielder's choice. Rafael Neda doubled and Michael Ratterree walked, reloading the bases. Angel Ortega drove in a pair with a single before the inning ended on a fly out by Omar Garcia. The six-run inning cut the lead to 11-7.
The Yankees answered in the home half as Miguel Andujar tripled and scored on a two-out double by Leonora, giving Tampa back a five-run cushion.
RHP Angel Rincon restored order by tossing three scoreless frames, earning his eighth save of the year. Rincon allowed one hit and tallied two strikeouts.
Campos allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits in five innings, striking out six while not allowing a walk.
Mateo (3-for-5, 2 2B, 2 R, SB) and Ford (2-for-4, HR, 2B, BB) collected three RBI apiece. Avelino (2-for-4, BB, SB) scored three runs. Leonora (3-for-4, 2 RBI, R) is batting .323 in his last 10 games.
Up next, the series concludes on Wednesday with LHP Chaz Hebert (6-5, 3.39 ERA) matching up against RHP Brandon Woodruff (1-5, 4.39 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
