Pilots win fourth in a row at home

Newark NY, June 24th, 2013 -- The Newark Pilots (7-6) scored nine runs on eight hits shutting out the Syracuse Salt Cats (7-5) from the New York Collegiate Baseball League (NYCBL), by a final of 9-0 in Monday nights exhibition game.

The middle of the lineup got things going as Scott Matthews (Washington College), who later scored on a wild pitch, tripled for two RBI. Jeff Edwards (Valparaiso) followed with a double to center scoring Lance Hamilton from (U of R) from second.

The Pilots added two more insurance runs in the third on a Taylor Hinshaw (Georgia College) triple and Steve Laurino (Marist) single.

The Salt Cats sputtered out of the gate with starting pitcher Zach Tucker of LeMoyne only pitching 2 1/3 giving up six hits and six runs before being taken out. Patrick Boyle (Wooster) came in relief in the fourth, he pitched four innings and gave up one run.

The Pilots starter and highlight of the night Ethan Humbert (RIT) faced 29 batters in seven full innings of work, allowing no runs, five hits and striking out five. Erik Brown closed the shut out pitching the final two innings while striking out three.

Matt Mckinnon (University of Pennsylvania), and Coleman Lukas are responsible for the other two earned runs. Scott Matthews was apart of a double steal, scoring from third in the eighth inning which gave the Pilots one of their last runs of the night.

The bright spot for the Salt Cats was Carlos Guzman (Molloy College) who went 3-for-4 on the night with three singles.

This win is the fourth in a row at home for Newark making the Pilots 4-2 at Colburn Park.

The Syracuse Salt Cats, next game is tomorrow in Geneva against the Redwings. The Pilots will try to continue their home winning streak when they host the Elmira Pioneers tomorrow night at Colburn Park with the first pitch at 7:05 p.m.
