Newark Pilots News Release

NEWARK, NY (6.18.17) - The Newark Pilots (3-9) walked-off against the Geneva Red Wings (9-6) in 10 innings at Colburn Park. After trailing 3-0 through 4, the Pilots got 1 in the fifth and 2 in the seventh, before winning it in the tenth. Peng-Fei Wang (Vanung) went 7, 6 hits, 3 runs (2 earned), while striking out 4. Jared Kasco (NJIT) went 6 for Geneva, 4 hits, and an earned run. Both pitchers received no-decisions.

Justin Barr (Central Alabama CC) scored the first run of the ball game in the fourth on an error by Pilots second basemen Jorge Leon (Hendrix College). Jake Evans (Alabama Southern CC) and Jared Kasco (NJIT) drove in the other 2 in the inning on singles to take a 3-0 lead.

The Pilots got a run back in the bottom of the fifth on a Mike O'Connor (Buffalo) groundout to cut the lead to 3-1. They then tied the game in the seventh on a single from O'Connor and a sacrifice fly by Mark McKenna (Canisius).

The Pilots bullpen came in relief of Wang and through 3 scoreless innings, allowing just 1 hit, 3 walks, and 7 strikeouts. However, no strikeouts were bigger then Chris Vitale's (Erie CC) in the tenth. With the bases loaded and two outs, pitching coach Bennett Schiltz decided to go to Vitale to face lead-off hitter Matt Chamberlain (New Haven). Vitale came in and threw 3 straight strikes for the strikeout to leave the bases loaded.

In the bottom of the tenth, the Pilots loaded the bases with 1 out off a walk, an error, and an infield single. Po-Chuan Pan (Fu Jen Catholic) grounded into a fielders choice to move Over Torres (Yavapai CC) to third. The first pitch from Geneva reliever Domenic Nardone (Siena) to Colton Carney (Seton Hill) bounced off the plate and Torres came in to score on the game winning wild pitch to win 4-3.

The Pilots are off tomorrow and will face the Onondaga Flames at their place in a double-header. The Geneva Red Wings will host the Jamestown Jammers tomorrow night.
