Peninsula Pilots News Release

EDENTON, N.C. - The Peninsula Pilots threatened late but could not pull out a victory as they fell 3-1 to the Edenton Steamers on Friday night at Historic Hicks Field.

After trading zeroes through the first couple innings, the Pilots got on the scoreboard first. Kyle Wrighte (William & Mary) reached on a one-out bunt single. After Wrighte stole second, Joe Poduslenko (Seton Hall) scored Wrighte with a single up the middle.

The Steamers immediately responded with a solo home run by Stefan Van Horn (Washington State) to tie the game at one apiece.

Edenton took the lead in the fifth inning with two runs with two outs. After two ground outs, Van Horn reached on an infield single before back-to-back walks to Mitchell Price (USC Aiken) and Ben Prada (UMass-Lowell) loaded the bases. Richard Cunningham (Baylor) gave the Steamers the lead with a two-run single.

The Pilots put the Steamers on their heels in the ninth to make things interesting. Two quick outs kicked off the inning but back-to-back singles by Poduslenko and Kyle McPherson (James Madison) gave the Pilots some life. Will Shepherd (Liberty) drew a walk to load the bases but Darian Carpenter (VCU) flew out to strand the bases full of Pilots.

Chris Gau (Jacksonville) took the loss to fall to 1-1 on the season. Gau gave up three runs in five innings of work. Devin Hemmerich (Norfolk State) followed with three scoreless innings and two strikeouts to lower his already microscopic ERA even lower.

Ted Christie (Union) took the win for the Steamers, tossing five innings of one-run ball, to move to 2-2 on the season. Drew Faintich (UCF) tossed a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season.

The CPL's leading offense was quieted for the first time as they turned in their lowest scoring output of the season. Despite the quieted offense, the team had three-hit games by both Poduslenko and Logan Augustine (Lincoln Memorial).

The Pilots face the Martinsville Mustangs on Saturday night and return home on Sunday to take on the Edenton Steamers for Tribute to the Military Night and the second fireworks display of the season.
