Pilots Defeats Capital City Reds

NEWARK, NY (6.16.17) - The Newark Pilots opened up their exhibition season with an 11-2 win over the Reds. The Pilots scored runs in each of their first four offensive innings to build a 9-1 lead, they would add 2 in the eighth to extend their lead. The Pilots drove in their 11 runs on 11 hits, they also made an error in the field.

Short on arms, the Pilots used 6 different pitchers, only one of them being a reliever, Jake Bernardo (Fordham), to combine to 5 hit the Reds. Catcher Jonathan Parker (Jones County JC), Infielders Graham Hackbarth (Pearl River CC) and Jorge Leon (Hendrix College) each pitched to innings in relief, combing to give up 2 hits, 2 walks, while striking out 3. Outfielder Matthew Lillard (Hendrix College) and Catcher Po-Chuan Pan (Fu Jen Catholic), combined to get the final six outs.

Newark put one run on the board in the bottom of the first on a Will Allocca (Virginia) sacrifice fly. They added another in the bottom of the second when Nick Capitano (Canisius) came in to score on a wild pitch to go up 2-0.

After surrendering a run in the top of the third on a single by Austin Blakeley (Panola CC), the Pilots got 5 in the bottom half to go up 7-1. Allocca and Wei-Chi Chen (Vanung) drove in the first 2 runs on singles. Zach Santoro (Notre Dame College) had the big hit in the inning when he hit a bases loaded, 3-run double down the left field line.

Newark got 2 more in the bottom of the fourth on a Nick Ely (Notre Dame College) 2-run double, to go up 9-1. The Reds got one back in the top of the eighth on a bases loaded walk from Lillard to Kosta Kafes (Alderson Broaddus University) to cut the lead to 9-2. But the Pilots rounded out the scoring when Mark McKenna (Canisius) stole home on a double steal attempt, and Over Torres (Yavapai CC) drove in a run with a single to round out the scoring 11-2.

The Pilots combined for 8 stolen bases, McKenna and Allocca each had 3, while Josh Loeffler (Connecticut) and Torres each had 1.

McKenna went 1-3 with a triple, 2 walks, 3 runs and 3 stolen bases. Loeffler went 1-4 with a triple, a hit by pitch, a stolen base, and 2 runs scored. Allocca went 1-1, with 2 walks, a hit by pitch, a sacrifice fly, 2 runs, 2 runs driven in, and 3 stolen bases. Torres went 2-4 with a walk, a stolen base, a run, and a run driven in. Chen went 2-5 with a run and an rbi. Ely went 2-5 with a double, a run scored, and 2 runs driven in. Capitano went 0-4 with a run scored. Santoro went 2-4 with a double, and 3 runs driven in. Mike O'Connor (Buffalo) went 0-3 with a walk.
