Newark Pilots News Release

Newark NY, July 3rd, 2013 -- Over an hour rain delay brought good luck for the Newark Pilots (9-15) as they take one back from the Dutchmen winning 4-2 Wednesday night at Colburn Park. (12-8).

With the Pilots leading 4-2 in the top of the ninth inning, Donald Frew (Young Harris) struck out the side as he retired all three Albany batters halting any chance of a comeback for the Dutchmen.

The first score of the game came in the third when Joe Purritano (Dartmouth) doubled to center field bringing in two Albany runners. Purritano was one of the Dutchmen s leading batters with two hits while making it safely on base four times throughout the night.

The Pilots quickly responded with three straight hits in the bottom of the third. Max Rosing (Cortland) is accredited with a fielders choice RBI, while Jacob Russell brought in the second run when he got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

The Dutchmen would not score again as Andrew Sanders (3-0, Ithaca) and his relief kept Albany at bay. Sanders pitched a full seven innings allowing eight hits and two runs. Austin Barnes (Hartford) set up Donald Frew to close the game.

Sean Spicer (Baylor) started for the Dutchmen and had a game high seven strikeouts. He allowed two runs over six innings before handing it off to Andrew Bannon (0-3, Mississippi State) who s accountable for the loss. Bannon allowed, what would end up being, the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.

Scott Matthews (Washington College) was the first to reach base in the seventh with a single. Sam Fox (Pomona-Pitzer) followed with a single of his own leading to a double steal by the pair. Max Rosing s center field single brought in the winning and insurance run making the score 4-2.

The Dutchmen have a day off on Thursday before traveling to Amsterdam on Friday to face the Mohawks. Meanwhile, Newark will stay at home and host the Utica Brewers for a Thursday night battle of the Western Division. Don t miss Thirsty Thursday and the Fourth of July celebration at Colburn Park.
