Phoenix Rising FC News Release
LIVERMORE, California - Defender Darnell King scored a highlight-reel-worthy goal in the second half, but it wasn't enough for Phoenix Rising FC (11-3-5) as the club fell 3-1 to Oakland Roots SC at Las Positas College. The loss ends the team's 10-game unbeaten streak. Oakland, winners of two straight and unbeaten in their past five matches, got goals from Wal Fall, José Hernández, and Ariel Mbumba. Rising returns home on Saturday, August 28, to face New Mexico United at Wild Horse Pass at 7:30 p.m.
Despite being outshot 10-to-2 by Phoenix in the first half, Oakland held on to a 1-0 lead at the break. In the 43rd minute, Jesús Enríquez slotted a ball back to Wal Fall, who fired a right-footed shot from the center of the box to beat the out-stretched arms of Rising goalkeeper Ben Lundt.
Oakland came out aggressively in the second half, extending the lead to 2-0 in the 51st minute. After Jeremy Bokila forced a turnover and had two shots blocked by the Rising defense, the ball popped out towards the center of the box. A lurking José Hernández ran up to the ball in space and blasted a shot into the back of the net to double Oakland's lead.
Phoenix Rising's Darnell King answered just two minutes later in the 53rd minute. Following a long Ryan Flood throw-in into the box, an Oakland defender tried clearing the ball with a header. But the clearance fell right to King outside of the box, who smashed the ball into the far-left side of the net before it could hit the ground.
But Oakland got a goal back in the 61st minute. Jesús Enríquez received a ball into box, pushed through Phoenix's defense, and sent in a shot that Lundt kicked away. The save went right to Ariel Mbumba and he fired a one-touch shot to the upper left corner before Lundt had a chance to stop it.
Rising returns to Wild Horse Pass this Saturday for a showdown with New Mexico United. Gates open at 6:00pm and the match kicks off at 7:30pm. The first 1,000 fans to arrive will receive a red "Solo" cup commemorating Solomon Asante. Fans can purchase tickets by heading to the club website at PHXRisingFC.com
