Boston Lobsters News Release

Playing its seventh match in eight nights, the Boston Lobsters needed to lean on marquee player Mark Philippoussis on Sunday with the Philadelphia Freedoms in town.

The Australian native proved quite sturdy, playing in, and, more importantly, winning both the men's singles and men's doubles sets as the Lobsters (3-4) downed the Freedoms 22-19 in overtime in Philippoussis' Mylan World TeamTennis home match debut this summer. "I thought we played better than the score showed," said Lobster coach Bud Schultz. "Mark's great. He brings that huge serve. If he can squeeze out a break, it's very unlikely that he will get broken." Philippoussis defeated Sam Groth of Philadelphia (1-4) in a set that featured two heavyweight Australians with punishing serves. The Lobsters marquee player had three aces in a 5-2 victory over Groth, who double-faulted three times. Playing alongside Butorac in men's doubles, Philippoussis added four more aces and showed splendid touch around the net as the duo picked up the victory 5-4 (5-3 in the tiebreaker) over Groth and Jordan Kerr. It was Philippoussis second match with the Lobsters. "It was an important win tonight. The crowd was awesome. There was a good vibe and a good atmosphere," said Philippoussis, who also talked about his own performance. "My natural game is serving big and being aggressive." Jill Craybas and Katalin Marosi defeated a pesky women's doubles team in Victoria Duval and Liezel Huber, 5-3. In the final match of the evening, Butorac and Marosi were defeated 5-3 in the mixed doubles against Groth and Huber, but they rallied to take the first game in overtime to clinch the victory. Youth got the better of experience in women's singles where 17-year-old Victoria Duval scored a come-from-behind, 5-3 victory over the 39-year-old Craybas. The Lobsters are home again tonight for a match against the Washington Kastles.
