Philadelphia Union II Add Midfielder Carlos Paternina to MLS NEXT Pro Roster

CHESTER, Pa. - Philadelphia Union II announced today that they have signed midfielder Carlos Paternina from Envigado F.C. to an MLS NEXT Pro contract. The 20-year-old will be added to the Union II's active roster pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and will occupy an international roster slot.

"Carlos comes from a team known for developing young talent and we think he has the ability to make an impact for us with his work rate and movement," said Union II Head Coach, Marlon LeBlanc. "He's an energetic midfielder who combines well and looks to play forward. I look forward to watching him develop in our system."

Paternina, 20, has been with Colombian side Envigado F.C. in the Categoría Primera A, the first-tier league in Colombia, where he made an appearance in a league match against Deportivo Pasto. Born in Itagüí, Paternina joined Envigado's youth team at the age of 13 and made his debut for the senior team in 2020. Envigado F.C is known for developing players such as James Rodriguez, Fredy Guarin, and Juan Quintero.

Paternina joins the previously announced Nelson Pierre, Jose Riasco, Stefan Stojanovic, Brooks Thompson, Chris Donovan, Maike Villero, Juan Perdomo, and Nathan Nkanji for a total of nine signed MLS NEXT Pro players. Additionally, Union II will utilize select first team and academy players for the inaugural MLS NEXT Pro season. The club's active roster will consist of up to 35 players, including 24 professional players and up to 11 amateur players, all of whom are eligible for selection on game days.
