Washington Spirit News Release
Washington, D.C. - The 2023 NWSL Draft, presented by Ally will take place on Thursday, January 12 during the United Soccer Coaches Convention in Philadelphia, the NWSL announced this week. The Washington Spirit is currently slated to hold two selections in the draft.
Entering the draft, the Spirit holds the 26th overall (third round) and 37th overall (fourth round) picks. The club does not own the rights to its first or second round picks due to previous trades. As part of the December 2020 trade with Orlando that brought defender Emily Sonnett to the District, the Pride owns the Spirit's first round pick (2nd overall). As part of the December 2021 trade with Chicago that earned the Spirit the 23rd overall selection in the 2022 draft, the Red Stars own the Spirit's second round pick (14th overall).
The NWSL has introduced a new entry process for players under 18 years of age wishing to enter the league. If a player under 18 meets the league's established criteria, they are eligible to be selected beginning in the 2023 draft. Full criteria for entry can be found here. Official rules for the draft can also be found here.
Taking place at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, next January's draft will be the league's first in-person draft since the 2020 edition in Baltimore. The Spirit selected midfielder Ashley Sanchez with the fourth overall pick that year.
Fans can secure their tickets to all the Spirit's 2023 home matches with a Full 90 membership. Available here, the season ticket membership grants fans access to priority seating, an exclusive gift from the Spirit, access to special events throughout the season and more.
