LINCOLN, Neb. - The Sioux Falls Pheasants outlasted the Lincoln Saltdogs in 12 innings on Friday night, winning 4-3 and claiming their spot in the American Association Championship Series.
The Pheasants swept Lincoln three games to none in the best-of-five series, winning all three games by one run. They now await the winner of the South Division Finals between Pensacola and Shreveport-Bossier. Shreveport-Bossier leads the series two games to one.
The Pheasants built a 3-0 lead before the Saltdogs tied the game with two runs in the sixth and a solo home run in the eighth from Albenis Machado.
The Pheasants took the lead in an uncharacteristic fashion. The team that led the league in powerful offensive production loaded the bases in the top of the 12th inning on a two infield hits and a walk. Beau Torbert then dribbled a ball toward third for an infield hit that plated Eddy Rodriguez.
Aaron Cotter allowed a one-out hit in the bottom of the 12th but then induced two flyouts to end the game. He earned his second save of the postseason.
The Pheasants starters provided three excellent starts in the series but were still outshined by a bullpen that combined to allow only one run in 12 1/3 innings. On Friday, a six-pitcher effort allowed just one run in relief of starter Ryan Rodriguez. Ryan Shaver (1-0) tossed three shutout innings for the win. Tycen PoVey (0-2) took the loss for the Saltdogs.
The American Association Championship Series begins at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday, September 7. The South Division winner will host Games 1 and 2. Games 3, 4, and 5 are September 10-12 at Sioux Falls Stadium. The series is a best-of-five format. All games will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM KWSN and www.kwsn.com.
Individual and group ticket information for the Pheasants is available by calling (605) 333-0179. Fans can also visit the Pheasants at www.sfpheasants.com.
